KIWANIS CLUB OF LOS ALTOS

More about Kiwanis . . .

THE CLUB
The Los Altos Kiwanis Club is one of about 8,593 Kiwanis Clubs throughout the world. Our club was organized in 1947, about five years before the City of Los Altos was incorporated, making us the first service club in Los Altos. We believe we were also the first Kiwanis Club in Kiwanis International to formally include women in our membership.

THE MEMBERS
We are a group of about 50 men and women who live or work in Los Altos and neighboring communities.  Our club is a service organization, similar to Rotary and Lions.  Our desire to serve the community is the common interest that brings us together.  Our service objectives are generally expressed in the "Objects" of Kiwanis. Membership is open to all adults interested in community service.

THE MEETINGS
We all meet for lunch once a week on Tuesdays to enjoy an excellent lunch and catch up with our friends.  Each week there is a speaker or other program of interest to our members.  A board of directors, elected by the members each year, handles the club's business at monthly meetings.  Kiwanis is not a mystical organization -- no funny hats and no secret rites.  We do have a softball team.  We are a very social group.  We are good friends and value the fun we have together.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
The community we serve extends from Los Altos to international projects.  We provide both volunteer and financial help. Our members contributed over 4,000 hours of community service last year. See the Other Club Activities page for several examples of Los Altos Kiwanis' community service projects, in addition to the Kiwanis Special Games and the Kiwanis Pet Parade, and the Kiwanis Christmas Tree Lot and other fundraisers that enable us to bankroll them.

KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL

Kiwanis International is an association of men and women committed to volunteer community service locally and world wide. Since 1915, the member clubs of Kiwanis International have donated time and financial support to worthy causes in their local communities.  Kiwanis International has some 323,249 members in 8,593 clubs in 83 countries.  Membership in Kiwanis student organizations world wide is about 239,046. Together, Kiwanis organizations annually donate over $70 million and more than 7 million volunteer hours for community service.

STRUCTURE OF KIWANIS
Each Kiwanis Club is a member of a group of neighboring clubs, which we call a "Division".  Our Division 34 includes all of the Kiwanis Clubs from Sunnyvale to San Francisco.

Divisions are grouped into larger "Districts".   Our Cal-Nev-Ha District includes, in its 45 Divisions, all of the Kiwanis Clubs in California, Nevada and Hawaii.
Kiwanis International consists of 46 Districts covering all corners of the globe.
